What if...I realized I had forgotten to introduce you to Tanyah Payne,

another amazingly talented tutors at SIA this year.

A scrapbooker for 6 years, Tanyah lives in Lismore, Northern NSW with her wonderful husband Brett and their two children.

Published in Scrapbooking Memories and given an honorable mention in the 2007 Masters competition Tanyah thrives on the new experiences and friendships that constantly evolve from being involved in the industry. Wanting to share this passion with others led to Tanyah starting a store where she teaches classes to all ages and skill levels from 4 years upwards. Being a very proud DT member for Bella and providing step by steps for Spotlight flyers, kits, blog inspiration, displays, magazine adverting and scrap-it TV is a huge joy and challenge and keeps her crazy busy but she wouldn’t change it for the world.

Tanyah’s style has been called eclectic and she loves bright, happy colours, layers and clusters . What if things aren't as they seem? ... then we would be dealing with illusions. An illusion is said to be the condition of being deceived by a false perception or belief. In this workshop we will be creating a spectacular floral topiary, but it's all an illusion. Real flowers wither and lose their luxurious look, so Dawn will show you how to make everlasting blooms from beautiful and tactile scrapbooking products. The other illusion is that it looks difficult, when in reality it is simple to create.

This is one instance where the illusionist will share her secrets so that you may, in turn, share them with others.

What is SIA and who organizes the event?

In 2007 a group of women passionate about the scrapbooking industry came together to organize a trade event for scrapbooking retailers in Australia. The founding group included Sally Wilson (Delish Designs), Melinda Melgar (Blueyed Dezines), Rebecca Erickson, Joan De La Hunty (both Rebecca Erickson Designs), Cheryl Durey (Aussie Scrap Source) and Joanna Baxter (BELLA!). Their vision was to create a show that would allow manufacturers and designers to come together once a year to showcase new products and designs, create a forum for industry participants to interact and share knowledge and to re-inspire and re-energise the industry on a yearly basis. The model for this was CHA in the USA which they had all attended and loved.

Why should we pay a fee to come to SIA?

The origins of SIA began as it became less and less affordable for manufacturers and designers to exhibit at other shows where the organizer’s main concern was profit for the company that was promoting the show. The philosophy of the SIA Committee is to make enough money to cover costs for a premium event that covers food, education and an exceptional experience for all. SIA has no major sponsors and the Committee believes the costs of creating an event for retailers and suppliers should be shared by the industry as a whole as it is in the USA. Smaller companies and designers (often fabulous innovators in this industry) can then afford to exhibit and introduce new products and ranges to the industry alongside larger companies and SIA can use funds to bring out overseas guests or assist local teachers where appropriate to educate and network with Australian retailers. There is an equity in the way the costs of the event are shared across industry participants for the good of all. Fees are allocated to services provided by the Show and include: administration regarding registration and event management, exposition hire, venue hire, banking fees, legal and accounting costs, first aid and security at the event, insurance, accommodation and airfare assistance for overseas guests where and if possible, catering for all attendees for two days and prizes and trophies.

Why is there a crop night this year instead of a dinner?

We have had some negative feedback in previous years about the dinner in relation to the affordability of it for some stores. Last year a number of store owners did not attend this event. The Committee has taken those comments on board and is mixing it up this year with an event that involves no extra cost to the retailer so that anyone who wants to attend this event can. We will run the crop night this year and seek your feedback after the Show so we can decide what to plan for next year.

What if I want to know more about the classes on offer?

Every year SIA tries to get as much info about the classes as possible prior to sending out the class registration form. This year we did not have enough exhibitors class descriptions in by the deadline so we listed the class names only. We encourage you to visit supplier blogs and websites and email your respective suppliers with any queries you might have about their classes. Descriptions have also now been noted on this blog also – see below.

What happens to funds left over after the Show?

Any funds that are remaining after all expenses are paid are reserved for the next event. The funds are spent only for the benefit of the next SIA Trade Show and no person profits from any funds that are left over. All (wo)man hours spent organizing the Show and travelling to meetings are voluntary and we greatly appreciate the great band of volunteers that work with us every year to get the event up and running. Of note this year are three Sydney retailers who have been very active in providing the Committee with their thoughts on how to provide a better event this year: Julie Hale (Fantasia), Sue Milne (Scraploot) and Anne-Marie Rayner (Memories that Last). If you wish to volunteer your services for next year’s event please contact us – we would love to welcome you on board.

How can I give the Committee some feedback about this year’s Show?

A survey will be handed out with your registration pack this year. We would greatly appreciate your feedback about this year’s Show and a box will be on the registration desk for completed forms. The completed surveys can be anonymous or not – we would love to hear from you regardless.

I've been scrapping since 1997, but really I started at around 7 years old,

when I used to make scrapbooks from items I clipped from newspapers and

magazines. I've always been happiest when creating something - sewing,

quilting, card making, decoupage just to name a few of the crafts I've

tried.

I love having the opportunity to design scrapbooking products... I am a

total product junkie, so it's awesome to think of something that doesn't

exist and create it. I love that others are inspired to use the products

I've designed and I get a real rush from seeing my ideas come to life.

I'm very much a free spirit when it comes to style, I'm a big believer in

not stifling creativity with what "oughta be" and just doing what the muse

says and not stopping to question or doubt myself. So I often have pages

that vary from style to style.

My husband and I run buzz and Bloom together since Helene's (mum's)

retirement last year. Mark and I have been together for just over ten years.

We got married in 2007 and live at home with our beagle, Columbus. Most of

my layouts are about Mark, me & Columbus, with others about family, friends

and very often, my nephews!

What if…Confucius was a cardmaker?

This class will utilise a new range of AED paper that will be released at SIA. The new range is ‘part 2’ of our new range called "Eastern Elements" and has an oriental theme. It is a versatile range of designs suitable for card making, scrapbooking and OTP projects and contains all gold foiled papers.

In this workshop we will focus on making 4 cards from our whole Eastern Elements range. We will make use of our new Sparkle n Soft sparkly flocking, AED Superfine glitter, fine detailed embossing powders and our amazing Hot Set Powder as well as our growing range of cushion mounted rubber stamps.

After completing this class you will have a good appreciation of how versatile our foiled papers are as well as having the opportunity to play with our new dual speed heat guns, sparkly flocking, embossing powders, glitters, and rubber stamps. I often get the giggles when people ask me what I do for a job. Cut and Paste I say. Thankfully I graduated from kindergarten because I have been one of the fortunate ones who has turned this hobby of scrapbooking into a living, a way of life. Living in Geelong with hubby, David and my three little girls, like many of you, have a love of photography and started scrapbooking to record all those moments I want to remember forever. After dabbling in many different crafts, this one stuck as you can incorporate so many of them into Scrapbooking with all the various techniques/. Whilst published in a number of scrapbooking magazines, a past SM Master and teaching at our LSS, my proudest achievement is starting the Crop for a Cause workshops where we have loads of fun but help out someone in need at the same time.

Working with Kaisercraft for over 5 years, currently as their Creative Director, has extended to me many exciting opportunities and been able travel both throughout Australia and overseas teaching and taking workshops. A highlight of last year was teaching at the South African International Conference and on an Australian Scrapbook Cruise.

One of my favourite things about this industry is the wonderful people you get to meet and the friendships that have been formed. I'm privileged to be teaching a class this year at SIA and look forward to the fun we will have. Come and meet the team at the Kaiser stand and let us show you what exciting things we have coming up in the next few months.

The first one is would be to remind your customers that they need to vote in order for you to have a chance at winning 'Retailer of the Year' ...the year..the year...the year (okay maybe it was just me but I always hear an echo after I say that!)

And the second would be to make sure you have plenty of your business cards on hand for the SIA, It's a great way to make a professional introduction and first impression.

Jennifer started stamping in 1994 and scrapbooking in 2002. She has taught stamping, scrapbooking, card making and beyond the page classes at various Gold Coast and Brisbane Scrapbooking stores. She has been on various design teams for both retailers and wholesalers and has owned her own online store. Jennifer is one of the original design team members for Alison Ellis Designs. Jennifer’s work has been published in many Australian Paper crafting magazines and online magazines and publications. Jennifer’s articles with step by step instructions for projects have also been published. Jennifer is inspired by anything and everything around her and she is extremely proud of her craft and it's versatility. She loves to share it with others and see the joy their creations instil in themselves and other people.

I’m Peg Hewitt, I live in rural NSW with my fabulous husband and 4 kids. I have had an interest in photography since receiving my first SLR at age 14 and I did it for my art major work in the HSC. Back then I had big plans but life, and a boy, got in the way. I have always been a cutter and paster too, so when I discovered modern day scrapbooking back in 2001 it was like meeting up with a dear old friend who had had a fabulous makeover.

I have had numerous pages published in all the Aussie mags, won lots of challenge blog prizes, was a runner-up in the Scrapbook Creations colour competition one year, was commissioned to write a digi-scrap article for Scrapbooking Memories and am currently serving on 2 design teams, Shop & Crop scrapbooking store at Lambton NSW and Alison Ellis Designs, manufacturer, based in Melbourne.

Digital scrapbooking was a passion for a few years when my kids were babies but I really missed the tactile and messy aspects of paper-crafting. I am keen to try lots of techniques and I often vary my style from page to page, scrapbooking for me is about personal creative time, the memory-keeping is a special added bonus. I feel privileged to be promoting and demonstrating Alison Ellis Designs’ gorgeous range of products at SIA again this year. Their papers are so pretty, with matching stamps, embossing powders, glitter-flock, glitter (which I think is the finest and most sparkly on the market), and Hot-Set powder (a particularly handy product), the range is great not only for scrapbooking but also card-making and mixed media pursuits. My name is Lisa Warren and I live on the South Coast of NSW, with my patient hubby Andrew and our two lovable ratbags (um, kids) Seth and Emeline. For as long as I can remember, I have loved taking photos, writing stories and playing with craft products. When I was introduced to scrapbooking in 2003, all of those loves were brought together and made complete sense. I love documenting my family memories, sharing those stories and having a bit of fun through the creative process. There's something so therapeutic about moving around paper and photos.

I have been afforded so many wonderful opportunities in the past seven years; teaching at Scrapbooking Delights www.scrapbookingdelights.blogspot.com, co-founding the sketch site and community, Inspired Blueprints www.inspiredblueprints.blogspot.com, being published in numerous scrapbooking publications and designing for fabulous manufacturers Pebbles Inc. www.pebblesinc.com and Scrapware www.scrapware.com.au. Julie lives in Perth, Western Australia and operates her business Collections Rubber Stamps creating stamps and paper products since 1997. Her business started in 1996 with a magazine publication, “The Rubber Gazette” and then was followed rubber stamp manufacturing. In about 2000, Julie started designing printed papers and die cuts and her line now extends to several hundred products. Many of her stamp designs are now manufactured under license in the USA with Stampington & Co.

During the past several years Julie has had the wonderful opportunity to travel the world teaching and inspiring her creative ideas with many wonderful artists and crafters. Her work has been published in “Somerset Studio” and “Stamp Art” by Sharilyn Miller.

When Julie is not working her interests include travel, computers, cooking and spending time with her twin daughters, Danielle and Lauren.

Tiff Sawyer is a wife and stay at home mum to 2 beautiful children and lives in Camden NSW, about 45 mins from Sydney.

After almost 15 years in the Real Estate industry, with an extensive background in public speaking, Tiff put her career on hold to become a stay at home mum and focus on her two small children, which is where her love of documenting the everyday began. What started as an interest in scrapbooking quickly developed into a sheer love of the craft. Tiff has achieved some wonderful scrapbooking accreditations in a short period of time. Since starting her blog Merry Memoirs Of Me in September 2008 and getting serious by submitting her work to magazines worldwide, Tiff has had over 60 projects published and been accepted onto several design teams including American manufacturer Rusty Pickle where she was assigned to seeking new talent and writing an article for the monthly newsletter and Australian chipboard manufacturer Twiddleybitz, for whom she currently coordinates the DT for Eastern Australia and international. Tiff has also had some of her work featured by Basic Grey and Websters Pages in addition to being featured for 3 consecutive days in the No 1 spot at 2 Peas for her December Daily album featuring Twiddleybitz products. Tiff also achieved an honourable mention in the 2009 Scrapbooking Memories Masters Competition for whom she has created commissioned work as well as being awarded the opportunity to create work for a major Australian scrapbook distributor, details of which will be released shortly.

After recently converted her garage space to a scrapbook studio, she hosts regular crop nights with mix of friends, experienced scrapbooker's and beginners to whom she provides step by step tutorials, much needed guidance and valuable tips and tricks of the trade.

Tiff's daily ritual of blog hopping and conversing with her fellow crafters, some of whom she's had the pleasure of meeting in real life is now such a major part of her life that she could not imagine life without them. She mentioned she could quite easily live without a mobile phone but not without her blog or computer LOL.

Lori Craig has been a lover of all things paper for as long as she can remember. She is one of those girls who loved indoor recess as a child so she could color just a little bit longer, and she still has her fourth grade sticker and stationery collection.

Lori took up stamping in 1999 and has never looked back. She regularly blogs her creations on her site, Make a Difference (http://loricraig.blogs.splitcoaststampers.com) and has been published in popular crafting magazines, including: Paper Crafts, Crafts 'n Things, CardMaker and Cards Magazine.   Lori holds the Advertising Account Manager position at Splitcoaststampers, (www.splitcoaststampers.com) a thriving online crafting community with both galleries and discussion forums. In addition to her work at Splitcoast, she maintains a teaching schedule which includes Copic Marker Certification classes for other marker addicts like herself. When she's not getting crafty, you'll find her at home in the Midwest with her husband and two girls, likely on the front porch swing, snapping peas.

Spotlight on...Marianne Walker

Marianne Walker is an artist turned crafter. She has been drawing her

whole life, and has been playing with scraps of paper as long as she

can remember. Marianne began stamping in middle school and moved away

from it, but in the last few years has returned to putting rubber to

paper. Colouring was not her favorite part of art, rather, drawing was

what she spent her hours working on. In art school Marianne found

Copic markers and instantly fell in love. Now coloring is her passion.

Marianne was first published at age 17 when she illustrated and did

graphic design on a series of books teaching kids safety. Since then

she has illustrated and worked on a number of publications including

training developing nations how to purify water, teaching kids how to

read, and most recently, training manuals for using Copic Markers. You

Marianne is currently the product specialist for Copic Markers in the

United States (www.copicmarker.com) and Senior Artist for the stamp

company Our Craft Lounge (www.ourcraftlounge.com) as well as the

annual designer for the Oregon Asian Celebration (www.aaforegon.com/asiancelebration).

Marianne's specialty is graphic design and illustration. This year

she will have worked 10 years for Copic in the U.S. as

their product specialist and graphic designer. She established the

worldwide Copic Papercrafting Certification program, which to date has

trained over 1,600 crafters. She teaches community workshops on

everything from Comic Drawing to Photoshop, and most recently,

Papercrafting. Marianne has a degree in Multimedia Design from the

University of Oregon and is a happily married mother of two kids.

Marianne will be demoing at the X-Press Graph-X / Copic booth at SIA this year.

Sarah Gladman is a Visual Arts and Photography teacher, currently living in the Hunter Valley of NSW. After finishing her Masters in Art Education in 1996, Sarah had several solo exhibitions in Graphic Art and Photography - then discovered scrapbooking. After the birth of her first child 9 years ago, Sarah has since worked as a Design Team member for several online sites both here in Australia and in the USA. Becoming a Design Team member for Upsy Daisy Designs and Chatterbox scrapbooking companies has also been a highlight of her scrapbooking career. She also spent a year designing digital scrapbooking papers and elements for a New Zealand company, Eidou. Sarah also tends to her blog, "Leonardo's Apprentice" which offers online Tips and Techniques for scrapbooking, stamping and photography. Her work can be found published in Scrapbooking Memories, Scrapbook Creations, Cardmaking and Papercraft and Somerset Memories magazines.

My name is Becky Fleck and I live in the beautiful Stillwater Valley of Columbus, Montana. I am an illustrator and graphic designer by trade and have been drawing in some form or another since I was a kid. I freelance design for several scrapbook and stamp manufacturers in our industry. I love the creative process and am particularly fond of stippling with Rapidograph pens.

I own and operate www.pagemaps.com, a free community resource of sketches for scrapbookers and cardmakers. In February 2008, I released a new book from Memory Makers called Scrapbook PageMaps, featuring 60 never-before-seen sketches in five popular sizes. The book also comes with a really cool card deck that detaches from the book. Each card has a sketch on one side, and a finished layout on the other. The card deck is super handy to take to crops, classes and shopping.

When I’m not designing or scrapbooking, I also enjoy fly fishing, camping, and watching football. I am a diehard Minnesota Vikings fan and cheer on my alma, the ASU Sun Devils. My husband and I live on an old cattle ranch on the Yellowstone River with our retrievers, Jackson, Harper and Libby.

Dawn Lewis is a freelance multimedia artist & designer, living on the NSW Central Coast with her family. She has been designing & demonstrating for Brandcorp for 4 years, including Francheville, Semco paints, Semco cross-stitch, Milford Threads and Easy Peasy brands. Dawn is a passionate teacher of all things creative. "My philosophy is that arts & crafts should be affordable, achievable & accessible. Brandcorp's many product lines fit so well with that philosophy, which is one of many reasons why I'm proud to work with them".

In 2009 Dawn toured around Australia demonstrating the Martha Stewart papercraft range at Spotlight stores. Dawn teaches scrapbooking and painting as well as designing project sheets to accompany Francheville & Martha Stewart products at your local Spotlight store. She is the designer & creator of the Semco 'Fifi & Frankie' cross stitch kits, and she has been published in Handmade magazine and Fine Art & Decorative Painting magazine. Other recent projects include co-writing a crochet pattern book for Milford Threads and filming a 'how to' segment for Scrap It TV (season 3) which airs on 15th July on Foxtel/Ausstar. She is actively involved in album creation for Southern Cross Kids Camps and painting memory boxes distributed by the Folk & Decorative Artists Association of Australia.

I am a wife, mum, store owner and scrapbooker from the beautiful south coast of NSW. I entered the world of scrapbooking via a friend about 7 years ago and since that first dabble in this craft, I was hooked completely and I have been enjoying the adventure of discovery everyday since.

I love paper and trying to use different mediums and ‘stuff” on my pages. My friends would probably say I had an eclectic style. Add a bit here and a bit there take some away and then add another bit…yep that’s me!

OTP is a big part of my DT work and I love to create gifts with a difference for my friends.

I teach at my store and have the honor of being on the DT for BELLA.

Scrapbooking is a huge part of my life; it has enabled me to find wonderful new friends and like-minded people who make my world a better place. I love to create a place for my families’ memories to be kept, honoring the past, preserving the now and holding them safe for the future.

Spotlight on...Nic Howard

A scrapbooker for eleven years, Nic Howard lives in New Zealand with her husband Paul, and their three children. Although residing in the total opposite end of the world, Nic still finds herself involved in the scrapbooking scene in the U.S.A, her most notable acheivements include tutoring alongside the amazing staff at Big Picture Scrapbooking and working with several manufacturers including Prima Marketing, Tattered Angels and BasicGrey.

Nic finds joy in the small everyday things and she has her camera ready to photograph them.

Nic's first large scrapbooking acheivement was becoming a 2005 Memory Makers Master . Since then her work has been found in numerous international books and magazines as well as in advertising and galleries of the manufacturers she works for. To date Nic's largest and most fulfilling accomplishment is the completion of a sole authored book, released mid-2007 through F+W publications, "That's Life, Finding Scrapbooking Inspiration in the Everyday" It was through writing this book she learnt to appreciate the little things that make her an enthusiastic scrapbooker - and she learnt to create pages about them.

Audrey lives in Perth with her wonderful family. Her passion for scrapbooking started early in 2001 having already had a background in papercrafts, including stamping and card making. She has been involved in many sorts of crafts over the years and can’t remember a time when she wasn’t doing something arty.

Audrey was first published in ‘Scrapbooking Memories’ and has also been published in ‘Scrapbook Creations’ and ‘Australian Papercrafts’. Over the past several years Audrey has written various articles, for several magazines and her wonderful and inspirational work has been on display at many trade and craft fairs.

To this day Audrey is still creating projects for advertising features in many Australian magazines.

She is a firm believer that any sort of craft is food for the soul.

I am feeling very inspired by the "What if..." theme of SIA this year, so inspired in fact that I have started making my own "What if..." list.

I can't wait to see the class interpretations of this theme.

Speaking of classes have you heard that Becky Fleck, Debbie Crouse, Paula Cheney, and Nic Howard are all going to be there? And one other inspiring US designer and tutor....but shhhhhh I can't tell you anything else until after CHA summer has wrapped up! Curious?
